Best wishes to those affected by the storm at the Indiana State Fair. Five people were killed when high winds collapsed the fair’s main concert stage Saturday. More than two dozen people were injured.
Arguments are ongoing whether more could have been done to clear the concert venue before the storm arrived. Fair organizers and the National Weather Service had several communications about the winds’ direction and approximate time of arrival. By the time an order to clear the venue was given, only four minutes remained before the stage collapsed.
The opening act had finished its performance. The headlining act, Sugarland, had yet to take the stage. The fair was closed Sunday. A memorial service was held today.
Franch Prime Minister Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel will meet tomorrow amid rumors of a “Eurobond” to help cure the European Union’s fiscal woes. Sarkozy and Merkel oppose such an instrument.
Eurobonds would help nations such as Greece and Italy borrow money since France and Germany would be, in effect, co-signing the debts. Not surprisingly, neither of Europe’s two biggest economies want to commit to additional bailouts.Sa
